Sports is on page 16… St. Louis Cardinal rookie Stan Musial went 3-3 at the plate in yesterday’s contest against the Cubs, which was Musial’s third game as pro. Cardinals skipper Billy Southworth picks another rookie, Erv “Four Sack” Dusak, to start today’s game against southpaw Johnny “Bear Tracks” Schmitz. Dusak came in to pinch-hit for Frank “Creepy” Crespi on Thursday in his first big-league at bat, but struck out looking at a pitch from Brooklyn reliever Manny Salvo.
While the Cardinals are up 2-1 as the paper goes to press, a pinch-hit grand slam by St. Louis native Bob Scheffing dampens the Cardinals playoff hopes as the Cubs score 6 in the ninth inning. With the Dodgers winning both games in a doubleheader against the Phillies, the Cardinals drop to two games behind Brooklyn in the NL pennant race. Scheffing, Schmitz, and Musial would serve in the Pacific Theater for the Navy during World War II.
Dusak tries to enlist in the Navy, but required surgery — which he paid for out of pocket — before joining the Army. After joining an anti-aircraft outfit, Dusak played baseball in the United States and across the Pacific.
