Anthony C. Holub’s Distinguished Service Cross citation

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Anthony C. Holub, United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Gunner of a B-17 Heavy Bomber in the 19th Bombardment Group (H), FAR EAST Air Force, in action against enemy aircraft on 8 December 1941, during the bombardment by Japanese airplanes against an airfield in the Philippine Islands. Technical Sergeant Holub voluntarily manned the guns on the top turret of his grounded plane to return the machine gun fire of attacking enemy aircraft. When his ammunition ran out, he sprinted 200 yards across an open field, got more from another grounded plane, and then dashed back to his post to continue firing on the enemy. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Technical Sergeant Holub on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Far East Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
