Nazi Germany has invaded the Soviet Union and the outlook of potentially rescuing the crew of the sunken submarine O-9 are becoming quite grim… On page 21, the Army thinks that the days of digging foxholes may be over, thanks to a new $60 tent on wheels…

The sports section begins on page 30, and the Detroit Tigers reportedly have signed Dick Wakefield to a monstrous contract. By comparison, the unproven prospect’s bonus is two-and-a-half times Ted Williams’ 1941 salary. It looks like the Chicago native may skip the minor leagues altogether and debut with Detroit this week…

Joe DiMaggio’s Streak

On this day in 1941, the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 in their final game of the series. Joe DiMaggio faced Hal Newhouser for the second time during his streak, belting a home run off the Tiger starter, and later, a double off reliever Bobo Newsom.

Newhouser was one of four future Hall of Fame pitchers DiMaggio faced during the streak: Boston’s Lefty Grove, Cleveland’s Bob Feller (twice), and Chicago’s Ted Lyons.

The streak is now at 35 games, moving DiMaggio into a four-way tie with Ty Cobb, Fred Clarke, and George Sisler. In today’s five plate appearances, he had two hits and two RBIs (one from a sacrifice fly in the third). His 15th home run puts DiMaggio on top of American League sluggers, tied with Detroit first baseman Rudy York.
