USS Reuben James attacked
As dawn breaks about 600 miles west of Ireland, Kapitänleutnant Erich Topp orders his U-boat crew to launch two torpedoes at the destroyer USS Reuben James. “Ol’ Rube” was escorting Convoy HX 156 from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Liverpool, England when U-552 attacked. Moments later, the torpedoes slam into the American destroyer, detonating the forward magazine. Reuben James was blown in half and the bow section sinks immediately.
Five minutes later the rest of the ship slipped below the waves, taking all seven officers with her to the bottom.
While the convoy escorts search for the enemy submarine, two of Reuben James’ sister ships, USS Niblack and USS Hilary P. Jones (DD 427) rush to pull survivors out of the oil slick that coats the near-freezing North Atlantic water. Of the ship’s 160 officers and men only 45 are rescued. Her late skipper, Lt. Cmdr. Heywood L. Edwards participated in numerous sports while a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy (Class of ’26) and finished fourth in his freestyle wrestling weight class during the 1928 Olympics. Erich Topp finishes the war as Germany’s third-most successful U-boat captain.
Goodbye (and good riddance), Josephus Daniels
The front page reports that Josephus Daniels, the Unites States Ambassador to Mexico, is retiring. Pres. Woodrow Wilson named Daniels the Secretary of the Navy in 1913 and he served throughout World War I. His assistant secretary was Franklin D. Roosevelt and the two became friends. Daniels made few friends among sailors, however. He banned alcohol from ships, meaning sailors were stuck with coffee — hence the nickname “cup of joe.” He also ran off the whorehouses that operated outside U.S. Navy bases.
On one hand Daniels honored God by ordering a halt to Navy work on Sundays, but on the other he was a white supremacist and used his newspaper, the Raleigh, N.C. News and Observer, to encourage violence against blacks. It is a travesty that men like Josephus Daniels treated black Americans the way they did and didn’t face any consequences. In a just world, Southern Democrats like him would have been the target of the political violence confronting America 100-plus years later. Daniels and Roosevelt also got into some serious trouble when they used young men to entrap and imprison homosexual sailors (see the Newport sex scandal).
Around the world in a B-24
On page 8, we see the B-24 Liberator bomber that has just completed a 24,000-mile trip around the world. Maj. Alva L. Harvey commanded the plane and this was his second attempt to circumnavigate the globe.
In 1924 Staff Sgt. Harvey was a mechanic aboard the Douglas World Cruiser Seattle, one of four such Army-crewed aircraft that were attempting the first round-the-world flight. Seattle‘s commander — and the overall mission commander — was Maj. Frederick L. Martin. As the planes traveled north to Alaska, Seattle had engine trouble, separated from the group, and crash-landed in Alaska.
Martin and Harvey climbed out of the aircraft, salvaged supplies and rations to keep them alive, and spent the next ten days trekking through the wilderness until they reached civilization.
17 years later, Harvey — now a pilot himself — finally made it around the world. And this time, there wasn’t any mechanical issues.
Harvey served as a B-17 test pilot before the war and later oversaw construction of the B-29 bomber. Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Martin was named commander of the Hawaiian Air Force, a position he will hold during the Pearl Harbor attack. While he was relieved, investigators determined that Gen. Martin had done all he could to maintain readiness and was given command of the Second Air Force in the Pacific Northwest.
