The Germans have arrested Prince Louis, Napoleon Bonaparte’s grand-nephew and pretender to the French imperial throne. Descendants of French royalty were banned from living in France, and the government denied his request to serve in the French Army when the Nazis invaded. He instead served in the French Foreign Legion under a different name and fought in North Africa. He joined the French Resistance after his release… Maj. Gen. Carl Spaatz has been named commanding general of the Allied Northwest African Air Force, overseeing American, British, and French air operations (see page two)…

Pictured on page nine is Pres. Roosevelt’s pastor, who is swearing in as a Naval officer. The president still serves as senior warden at St. James Episcopal Church whenever he is at Hyde Park (N.Y.)… Vice Adm. C.E.L. “Ship-a-Day” Helfrich of the Royal Dutch Navy gives an account on page 11 of Dutch naval power in the Pacific and states that while he thinks that the Japanese will fight to the last man, that their defeat is inevitable… Sports section begins on page 22, and Washington Nationals owner Clark Griffith is been trying to phone Eldon Auker to determine if he will pitch this year or work in the defense industry. It is still up in the air if the man Griffith traded — former “Gashouse Gang” pitcher Paul Dean — will be working or playing this year…

Former Chicago White Sox third baseman Bob Kennedy is pictured on page 23 while he is training to become a pilot at the University of Chicago. He becomes an Marine Corps aviation instructor and will train his former opponent Ted Williams while at Pensacola. The two also play together on the Naval Air Station’s baseball team. Kennedy’s best baseball years are still ahead of him. His son Terry plays catcher in the big leagues from 1978-1991.
