On page four we learn that Maj. Gen. Millard F. Harmon, currently leading the Second Air Force, is expected to be named the new Commanding General of the Air Force Combat Command. He graduated from West Point (Class of ’12) then accepted a commission in the infantry. After service in the Philippines he became a pilot in the Signal Corps and flew patrol missions on the Mexican border during the Punitive Expedition. He was attached to the French Air Force and earned the Croix de Guerre during the Somme Defensive. Harmon would replace Lt. Gen. Delos C. Emmons, whom Washington sent to Oahu on Dec. 17 and is the Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department. Meanwhile on page seven, Adm. Chester W. Nimitz has just arrived in Hawaii to take over for ousted Pacific Fleet commander Rear Adm. Husband E. Kimmell…
Sports section begins on page 21 and previews the upcoming East-West Shrine Game in New Orleans. The man to beat seems to be Oklahoma’s “Indian” Jack Jacobs. He is so good, in fact, that a young Darrell Royal once hitchhiked 170 miles just to watch the Jacobs play. Royal will play football for the Third Army Air Force, where he was spotted by Oklahoma’s scouting program. After the war Royal became an All-American Sooner himself, before becoming the winningest coach in Texas Longhorns history…
Pictured is former Washington Nationals right fielder John K. “Buddy” Lewis, now a squad leader in the Army. Lewis tried to become a pilot but lacked a college degree which was required at this early point in the war. More on Buddy Lewis later.
