Page 11 briefly mentions that the Army Air Corps opened up enlistment for “Negroes.” The 99th Pursuit Squadron was activated at Chanute Field (Illinois) on March 22 and does not yet have any pilots. Black non-commissioned officers are sent over from the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments and a white officer, Capt. Harold R. Maddux, is named squadron commander.1 Nelson Brooks, William R. Thompson, Elmer D. Jones, Dudley Stevenson, and James Johnson have been selected for Officer Training School and will be the Air Corps’ first black officers once they graduate.
