NOTE: Page A-20 was not digitized… The war’s 112th week is summarized on page 31… Page 32 explains — in part — the process and considerations of firing a naval gun at a target 20-plus miles away, well beyond the horizon… Sports section begins on page 39, which features a picture of crews installing the new scoreboard at Griffith Stadium for today’s game against the cellar-dwelling Cleveland Rams.

Parker Hall

Cleveland’s backfield includes Parker Hall, who won both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player titles in 1939. Their owner Dan Reeves will join the Army Air Force during the war, and Hall serves as a Naval officer. In 1946 Reeves is back and shakes up professional football: He moves the Rams to Los Angeles — the first major sports team to operate on the West Coast. There was an unofficial ban on black players, because there weren’t any between 1934 and 1945. Reeves signs former UCLA standouts Kenny Washington and Woody Strode before the 1946 season, who along with Jackie Robinson, formed the “Gold Dust Trio” backfield which thrilled Coliseum fans back in 1939…
