Pictured on the front page is the predecessor to the Amtrak (amphibious vehicle-tracked), which will carry Marines onto enemy-held beaches in the Pacific Theater. The Amtrak makes its debut at Guadalcanal, carrying supplies to shore and evacuating wounded leathernecks…

Dwight Eisenhower, having just wrapped up the Louisiana Maneuvers, has just received promotion orders and will pin on general’s stars on Oct. 3. (see page 3). Recognized as a high-performance officer, the Army has Eisenhower on the fast track as he only became a full-bird colonel in March. Two years ago, Lt. Col. Eisenhower served with Gen. Douglas MacArthur, advising the Philippine government on the formation of their army. After that, he commanded 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry at Fort Lewis, Wash. before becoming chief of staff for IX Corps prior to his current post, chief of staff for Gen. Walter Krueger’s Third Army.. Page four wraps up the Louisiana Maneuvers, which are concluding in time for soldiers to catch the World Series… Sports on page 40
