Sports section is on page 44… Page 2 mentions Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis’ upcoming title defense against Lou Nova (26-2 record with 4 draws). 50-1 going into the Sept. 29 matchup at the Polo Grounds, the champ has one more match before enlisting in the Army in January of 1942… Another Soviet general has reportedly been captured (page 7), this time by the Finns. Maj. Gen. Vladimir Vasilevich Kirpichnikov, former commander of the 43rd Rifle Division, will spend the rest of the war as a prisoner before his postwar release and subsequent capture and execution by the Soviet Union for surrendering… While the situation is grim on multiple fronts for the Red Army, German commanders are realizing at this point that they won’t be able to defeat the Soviets before winter sets in.
