The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the NAVY CROSS (Posthumously) to

Harvey M. Andersen

Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in action during the attack on the Light Cruiser U.S.S. MARBLEHEAD (CL-12), by Japanese enemy bombers on 4 February 1942. Although wounded, Lieutenant Commander Anderson directed fighting of fires, the rescuing of wounded in the forward part of the ship and in maintaining water-tight integrity of the ship. His outstanding courage and determined skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
