Wayne B. Bracey’s Silver Star citation

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to

CORPORAL WAYNE B. BRACEY, USMCR.,

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the First Battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced, in action against enemy forces during the invasion of Japanese-controlled territory in the Solomon Islands Area from August 7 to 9, 1942.Undaunted by withering blasts of hostile weapons, Corporal Bracey fought with skill and daring against the well-entrenched foe during the hazardous initial landing on Tanambogo, continuing his aggressive action until he and his comrades were ordered to withdraw and proceed to Gavutu. While attempting to effect a precarious landing in the face of tremendous opposition by the enemy ashore, Corporal Bracey maintained his courage and determination throughout long periods in the water under intense fire before he and the other marines finally succeeded in gaining the beach. His valiant devotion to duty throughout this hazardous period was in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service.”

For the President,
Frank Knox
Secretary of the Navy.
