II. AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR:

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Army Regulations 600-45, August 8, 1932, A Silver Star is awarded by the Commanding General, United States Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, to each of the following named officers and enlisted men:

HOMER B. ASHLEY, (298738) Private First Class, United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action on January 13, 1943 at Guadalcanal. Private First Class Ashley, calling for two volunteers, pushed forward of the front lines to engage enemy attempting to place knee mortars in action. With two companions, he disposed of two mortar-enemy and one sniper. He returned five different times to his own lines to obtain additional ammunition. Eventually twelve enemy were killed and several others wounded, and a rifle and sub-machine gun recaptured. During the action Private First Class Ashley sustained a wound in his left hand.
