John M. Schmittou’s Silver Star citation

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to

FIRST SERGEANT JOSEPH M. SCHMITTOU, USMC.,

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity with an Assault Company of the First Marine Division in combat against enemy Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on December 26 to 28, 1943.After leading his men for two days against the enemy in the face of heavy machine-gun, rifle and mortar fire, First Sergeant Schmittou was seriously wounded on December 28 while engaged in a fierce fire fight, but courageously continued to carry out his duties until ordered to the rear by his commanding officer. By his outstanding leadership and heroic devotion to duty throughout this critical period, he rendered invaluable assistance to his company commanding officer and was an inspiration to all with whom he came in contact. First Sergeant Schmittou’s valiant conduct under the most hazardous conditions was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
