Erwin E. Phillips Silver Star citation

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL posthumously to

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS ERWIN E. PHILLIPS, USMC.,

for service as set forth in the following

CITATION:

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, January 2, 1944. When withering enemy machine-gun fire from well-concealed positions retarded the advance of his company, Private First Class Phillips unhesitatingly volunteered with several comrades to protect a half-track in an attempt to wipe out the heavily fortified hostile pillboxes. Although mortally wounded during the ensuing action, he steadfastly remained at his post until ordered to a first aid station. Private First Class Phillips’ courageous initiative and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.”

For the President,
/s/ James Forrestal
