The Germans are claiming to have annihilated eight Soviet armies at Bryansk and Vyazma, and that they had nothing to do with yesterday’s attack on the destroyer USS Kearny… On page four: British pilots flying the the Bell P-39 Airacobra for the Royal Air Force have plenty of good things to say about the American-made fighter…

The new aircraft carrier USS Hornet is pictured on page five on the eve of her commissioning… Winston Churchill’s daughter Sarah has joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force where the former actress will serve as a photographic reconnaissance interpreter…

Sports begins on page 27… Michigan’s Tom Harmon and Texas A&M’s John Kimbrough, number one and two in last year’s Heisman voting, are pictured on page 29 during practice for the New York Yankees football team. Their first game is tomorrow…
