The front page reports Lt. Bernhard Berndt, who served as first watch officer aboard the now-captured German submarine U-570, was shot dead during an escape attempt. According to Uboat.net Berndt was trying to clear his name by scuttling U-570 which was the only submarine ever to surrender to an airplane. The U-boat’s skipper Kapitänleutnant Hans-Joachim Rahmlow (just seven days into his first war patrol) was incapacitated by gas from leaking batteries and the decision to abandon U-570 was made by Berndt…

Also on the front page, Pilot Officer Roger H. Atkinson of the Royal Air Force’s No. 71 ‘Eagle’ Squadron has perished. The Rockford, Ill. native was conducting aerobatic testing when his Supermarine Spitfire Vb experienced a structural failure. He bailed out over Woodford, Essex but his parachute did not open… Sports on page 17.

After sixth-ranked Michigan defeated fifth-ranked Northwestern 14-6, Michigan moves up to No. 3 and will face top-ranked Minnesota this week. While Saturday’s game between the Oklahoma City University Goldbugs and the Youngstown College Penguins didn’t make the news, it is the first time a flag is thrown to mark penalties in a football game. Until now officials relied on whistles. The fans approve and the penalty flag sticks.
