War’s 130th week summarized on page 29… Sports section begins on page 37, which reports that Al Blozis has set a new shotput record, and Boston Red Sox catcher Frankie Pytlak has been classified 1-A. Rather than wait to be drafted, he enlists in the Navy and plays for Mickey Cochrane’s ball club. St. Louis Cardinal prospect Hank Nowak has entered the Army (see page 38), and he will pitch for Camp Lee’s baseball team before being transferred to the infantry. Nowak is killed on January 1, 1945 in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.
