On page four: War Department communiques 135 and 136, pictures of the “new” B-17E, and a 102-year-old Civil War veteran passes… Three months after hitting Pearl Harbor, the Japanese navy returned to Oahu with conducted their own take on the Doolittle Raid. Two four-engine Kawanishi H8K flying boats took of from the Marshall Islands for a 2,400-mile trip to Hawaii.

Arriving to find the island obscured by clouds, they each dropped four 550-pound bombs on where they estimated Pearl Harbor would be and turned around for the 2,400-mile return journey (see page five)… George Fielding Eliot column on Java on page 15… Sports section begins on page 24, which features a story where Joe DiMaggio explains why he is holding out — after one, if not THE best seasons in baseball history, the Yankees are offering him the same salary he made last year… Pvt.
