Edmundson (future lieutenant general) tells how he and his bomber crew sunk one of the first enemy submarines of the war on page four, as are War Department communiques 171 and 172… On page five, Cpl. Harold R. Hazelwood and Ensign Joseph K. Taussig (son of Adm. Joseph Taussig Sr.) are decorated with the Navy Cross for valor during the Pearl Harbor attacks…

Hollywood icon Robert Montgomery is about to become a PT boat officer (see page nine)… George Fielding Eliot column on page 13… On page 17 we learn that all 21 members of the USS Arizona band were killed on Dec. 7 while passing ammunition… Sports section begins on page 48, which discusses Hank Greenberg’s chances on returning to top form once his military service is over
