Ever heard of the coal miner who became king? Sounds like a fairy tale, especially when you hear he was also a U.S. Marine. You can read all about Gunnery Sergeant Faustin E. Wirkus on page two. The story mentions that Wirkus served under two generations of Van Orden commanding officers; in fact there have been four generations of Marine George Van Ordens…
On page 13, the “giant new war building” — soon to be dubbed The Pentagon — is months ahead of schedule… Page 24 reports that American troops are operating in North Africa. One member of the mission is Army Air Force navigator Maj. Elliott Roosevelt, son of Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt. He is currently assigned to a photographic reconnaissance unit and we will find out more about what he is working on soon… The war’s 139th week summarized on page 28… Sports section begins on page 36
