Brig. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle sat with Glenn L. Martin as spectators witnessed the maiden voyage of the massive Martin Mars over the Chesapeake Bay (story on the front page). This flying boat was launched back in November 1941 and its wings have a surface area two-and-a-half times greater than a B-17’s.
