Projected Service All-Star lineup for today’s game at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium

The front page briefly previews today’s game between the American League All-Stars, who just beat the National League yesterday, and the Service All-Stars. Former Indian Bob Feller will likely get the nod to pitch for Mickey Cochrane’s Army-Navy team. Standing by will be former White Sox right hander Johnny “Dunk” Rigney. His battery mate would be Frankie Pytlak — another hometown player. Of these four players, none have seen a big-league field since 1941 besides Rigney, who squeezed seven games in this year. The only starter without Major League experience is Ernie Andres, who spent 1941 at the Boston Red Sox AA affiliate Louisville Colonels. Former heavyweight champions Jack Dempsey (lieutenant, U.S. Coast Guard) and Gene Tunney (commander, U.S. Navy) and an M3 Grant medium tank will be part of the events…

The M3 is armed with a 75-mm. main gun, a 37-mm. turret, and several .30-06 machine guns

Speaking of boxers, the front page also mentions that welterweight champion Red Cochrane will be fighting the top contender, undefeated Sugar Ray Robinson, in a non-title USO benefit match in September…

Page two discusses Maj. Gen. Carl A. “Toughie” Spaatz, the commander-in-chief of U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater… Bruce Smith, former halfback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the 1941 Heisman Trophy winner, is in the Navy now. Ensign Smith is pictured on page three as he makes his cot at Great Lakes Training Center…

Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. is back to work after returning from combat (see page six). Pres. Roosevelt ordered that all members of Congress serving in the Armed Forces had to give up one of their jobs, and the Republican senator chose to return to Washington. Major Lodge led a three-tank squadron of volunteers from the 1st Armored Division that served under British commanders during the Battle of Gazala — the first time Americans and Germans engaged in ground fighting… George Fielding Eliot column on page 11… Sports section begins on page 16
