The front page reports that Nazi Germany wanted to invade the United States through Mexico in 1939, and Senator Henry Cabot Lodge is back to work in the Senate after returning from North Africa… Page three features a picture of Joseph Lockard, the radar operator who spotted the Japanese invasion on Dec. 7, who is now a second lieutenant…

On page six Frederick Holbrook Mahn, an American bomber pilot serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force, chronicles his two weeks spent in a life raft on the North Sea… An American bomber crew has a fascinating story of hacking their way through the jungles of New Guinea to find a World War I-era biplane, fixing it, flying it, and then reaching safety (see page eight)…

George Fielding Eliot column on page 11… Sports section begins on page 14 and features a story on 34-year-old Brooklyn pitcher Larry French, who has put together a remarkable season since being acquired by the Dodgers. He finishes the year just three wins shy of 200 and joins the Navy. Although he is stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and still works out with his former club, he is not allowed to play big-league ball. French will spend 17 months on combat duty during the war, serving both in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters — and participated in the Normandy Invasion. He remains an officer in the Naval Reserve after the war and is recalled for service during the Korean War…

Heavyweight champion boxer Joe Louis — aka Joseph Louis Barrow — is now a sergeant and is pictured on page 12 at cavalry school.
