Below the fold on today’s front page we learn that New York Yankees’ all-star right fielder Tommy Henrich joined the Coast Guard yesterday. The Yankees picked up Roy Cullenbine from Washington, whose owner Clark Griffith is selling off some talent. Cullenbine got Henrich’s locker, his uniform number, and spot in the batting order…
Bobo Newsom is another player unloaded by Griffith. The 34-year-old righty is headed for Brooklyn after his second stint in Washington. He’ll be back three more times, being able to brag one day that he has served more terms in Washington than FDR…
On page two, Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant III has succeeded President Roosevelt’s uncle as Chairman of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission. He is the grandson of the famous Civil War general and president. Grant graduated sixth in the U.S. Military Academy’s Class of 1903 — Douglas MacArthur was first — and was commissioned in the Engineer Corps. He served in the Philippines, Cuba, the Mexican Border, the Veracruz Operation, and World War I. His father, Frederick Dent Grant, was the president’s oldest son and was shot in the leg during the Siege of Vicksburg. He too was a graduate of West Point and fought in the Indian, Spanish-American, and Philippine-American Wars…
