On today’s front page President Roosevelt is asking Congress for nearly $5.6 billion of additional funding for the Navy, much of which will go towards additional warplanes. And on the next page — whether it was coordinated or not — Lt. Cmdr. John S. Thach of Midway fame says that Naval aviators are the best pilots in the world and are better suited to stick it to the Japanese than a theory being discussed of relying heavily on land-based long-range bombers in the Pacific…

Lt. Col. John S. Chennault, son of “Flying Tiger” boss Brig. Gen. Claire Chennault, led a sortie where he and his fellow 11th Fighter Squadron pilots took turns strafing a Japanese submarine at Kiska they caught on the surface. Chennault also splashed a Japanese flying boat. To get an idea of how remote Kiska Island is, Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula is just over 500 nautical miles to the west while Anchorage is 1,2000 miles to the east… Two Marine Corps brigadier generals have been promoted: Julian C. Smith and Charles D. Barrett, who will soon be picked to command 2nd and 3rd Marine Divisions, respectively (see page nine)…

1942 World Series

Sports begin on page 16, which previews today’s Game 1 of the 1942 World Series. Mort Cooper, who won 22 games this year gets the start for the Redbirds while Red Ruffing will be on the mound for New York. Mort’s catcher will be brother Walker. Sports writer Hugh Fullerton Jr. picks the Yankees to win in five games.
