Page two reports that Charles Lindbergh has been classified 3-B by his local draft board. On the same page, Rear Adm. John S. McCain has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. McCain is currently in command of land-based Naval air operations, including Guadalcanal’s “Cactus Air Force.” He sailed with the Great White Fleet and served convoy duty in the Atlantic during World War II and is the grandfather of the late U.S. Senator John McCain III.

McCain’s son, John Jr., is currently enroute to North Africa in command of the submarine USS Gunnel. The McCains will become the first father and son to become four-star admirals. Grandson John III recently celebrated his fifth birthday. All three McCains graduated the U.S. Naval Academy, but they were not particularly high scorers:

  • John Sr. (Class of 1906) finished 79th out of 116
  • John Jr. (Class of ’31) finished 423rd out of 441
  • John III (Class of ’58) finished 894th out of 899

John Jr. was Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Naval forces in Europe when he learned his son was shot down over North Vietnam. The following year — 1968 — John Jr. is named Commander-in-Chief of Pacific Command…
