On today’s front page Andrew Jackson Higgins, inventor of the famous Higgins boat, plans to build a fleet of monstrous flying boats. According to the article, Higgins’ six-engine plane would haul some 200,000 lbs. of cargo. That is comparable to a modern-day C-5 Galaxy, which can carry 281,000 lbs. Higgins Aviation only builds two Curtiss C-46 Commando transports before their contracts are canceled and their massive assembly facility near New Orleans is auctioned off. During the Apollo program Chrysler used the factory to assemble the first stage of Saturn I and IB rockets, later joining Boeing to build the first state of Saturn V rockets…
