George Fielding Eliot column on page eight. Col. Merrit A. “Red Mike” Edson has been awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership and heroism during the Battle of Edson’s Ridge (see page 30)… Sports section begins on page 34, which previews today’s Rose Bowl Game. While Frankie Sinkwich is too injured to start, Georgia’s backfield is still in good hands with sophomore Charley Trippi. Western Defense Command has determined that the threat of enemy attack is low enough for the Rose Bowl to return to Pasadena, while the East-West Game can once again be played in San Francisco. The Second Air Force Superbombers, which we discussed earlier in the month, are also appearing in a bowl game today.

Trippi’s college career is interrupted by the war, and he plays for the Third Air Force Gremlins in 1944. He also played one season of minor league ball with the Southern Association’s Atlanta Crackers. Many big league clubs offered to sign Trippi, but he decided to stick with football. He returns to Georgia after the war, then begins a nine-year Hall of Fame career in the NFL. He recently passed away, just weeks shy of his 101st birthday.
