Page three reports that the Eighth Air Force had a record month in July… George Fielding Eliot discusses Mussolini’s future on page four… The Army Air Force is celebrating its 36th birthday today (see page 17). In 1907 the Signal Corps’ aviation section consisted only of Capt. Benjamin D. Foulois and two enlisted soldiers. After the World War he met with scores of Luftwaffe pilots, including aces Ernst Udet and Hermann Göring, to gather aviation intelligence from the Germans. Foulois rose to the rank of major general and retired in 1935 as Chief of the Air Corps. There was no ceremony of any kind when he left, having ruffled too many feathers during his time in uniform, including butting heads with Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt. His replacement was Maj. Gen. Oscar Westover, who names Brig. Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold as his assistant. When Westover is killed in a 1938 plane crash, Arnold takes over as Air Corps Chief…

Sports section begins on page 22… Grantland Rice discusses Rip Sewell and how long players stay in the minor leagues on page 23. On the same page, the Brooklyn Dodgers have traded 36-year-old first baseman and 1941 National League MVP Dolph Camilli to the New York Giants. Camilli wants no part of playing for the Giants — the two clubs are bitter rivals — and instead of reporting to the team he will head for his ranch in California. The Dodgers also recently dealt away another former star — Fat Freddie Fitzsimmons’ playing days have come to an end and he will take over as skipper of the Phillies from Bucky Harris…

Future St. Louis Cardinals hall of famer Al “Red” Schoendienst is mentioned on the same page, sitting 20 points above the rest of the International League batters despite being in a slump. Managing Red’s Rochester Red Wings is Pepper Martin, one of the members of the Gas House Gang… This week in the war summarized on page 32… French general Henri Giraud’s story of his escape from Königstein Fortress last year on page 39…
