The Brooklyn Dodgers have claimed veteran Chicago Cub pitcher Larry French off waivers. The Society for American Baseball Researchers calls the 33-year-old lefty “one of the most overlooked and underrated pitchers of the 1930s.” We will check back in on French next season

Page two mentions a Royal Air Force squadron commemorating a fallen comrade named Dickie Lee. Flight Lieutenant Richard “Dickie” Lee notched No. 85 Squadron’s first victory of the war when he splashed a Heinkel He-111 bomber on Nov. 21, 1939. He shot down eight more enemy warplanes in his Hawker Hurricane before he went missing over the English Channel on Aug. 18, 1940. The King personally presented Lee with the Distinguished Service Order and Distinguished Flying Cross…

Lee was 23 years old
