The 503rd Parachute has formed, ahead of schedule. The article on page seven profiles Col. William C. Lee — the “Father of the U.S. Army Airborne” — and also mentions Brig. Gen. Omar N. Bradley, who commands Fort Benning… Sports section begins on page 26. The St. Louis Cardinals are crippled by injuries coming in to their crucial series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Enos Slaughter will be out the rest of the year with a broken collarbone, Terry Moore is still hospitalized from being beaned, and Johnny Hopp’s hand is still too swollen to grip a bat…
Redskin backs Ray and Cece Hare are pictured on page 28 as part of the preview of this year’s Redskins football team. The brothers begin playing together this season. Legendary Monster of the Midway Bronco Nagurski will later say: “When Ray Hare hits you, you go down.” Ray will join the Army Air Force and Cece becomes a torpedo bomber pilot, after a stint playing football for Chapel Hill. Both brothers are in Gonzaga’s Hall of Fame…
War’s 103rd week summarized on page 34… John Garand, the man behind the famous semi-automatic rifle, is profiled on page 36, while American and Japanese aircraft carriers are compared on the same page…
Land mines have caused more casualties in the African Theater than small arms and artillery, and the Army is training its soldiers how to detect and clear mine fields (page 14). Ignorance and carelessness of our own troops are apparently more a factor than cleverly hidden mines… A correspondent tells his story of the Battle of Viru Harbor on page 20.
