On the front page, Joe Cronin (Boston Red Sox) and Frankie Frisch (Pittsburgh Pirates) will each lead a team of all-stars through the South Pacific after this year’s World Series. The rosters:

American League

  • Pitchers: Spud Chandler (Yankees), Dizzy Trout (Tigers), Orval Grove (White Sox), Dutch Leonard (Nationals), Allie Reynolds (Indians), and Tex Hughson (Red Sox)
  • Catchers: Jake Early (Nationals), Bill Dickey and Rollie Hemsley (Yankees)
  • Infielders: Rudy York (Tigers), Bobby Doerr (Red Sox), Luke Appling (White Sox), Bill Johnson and Joe Gordon (Yankees)
  • Outfielders: Charley Keller (Yankees), Pete Fox (Red Sox), George Case and Stan Spence (Nationals)

National League

  • Pitchers: Al Javery (Braves), Bucky Walters and Johnny Vander Meer (Reds), Truett Sewell (Pirates), Al Gerhauser (Phillies), and Hi Bithorn (Cubs)
  • Catchers: Walker Cooper (Cardinals) and Ray Mueller (Reds)
  • Infielders: Elbie Fletcher and Bob Elliott (Pirates), Lou Klein (Cardinals), Eddie Miller (Reds), and Dick Bartell (Giants)
  • Outfielders: Stan Musial (Cardinals), Vince DiMaggio (Pirates), Augie Galan and Dixie Walker (Dodgers), and Joe Medwick (Giants)

Also on the front page: the Marines have occupied the island of Nanumea, which is 1,000 nautical miles east of Guadalcanal. The Seabees landed there earlier this month and began building the airstrip. On Sept. 19th Marine Fighting Squadron 441 (VMF-441) began using the runway…

And 2nd Lt. Robert H. Knapp believes his P-47 Thunderbolt achieved speeds of well over 800 miles per hour in a dive over Germany. The controls of his “Jug” froze up during the dive but the pilot managed to pull out before slamming into the ground. When he returned to base, ground crews discovered that the heat generated in the dive peeled the paint on the plane’s elevators…

On page three: Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. (R-Mass.) says that our troops are frustrated by the over-optimistic news reports in the media. Lodge was among the first American troops to fight the Germans when he was a tank officer in Libya. Rear Admiral Dewitt Clinton Ramsey agrees. The current Chief of the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and former skipper of the USS Saratoga says that we are in for a long fight against the Germans and Japanese. George Fielding Eliot also adds to the argument, pointing out that while the Germans are on their heels on the Eastern Front, the Wehrmacht is far from being defeated (see page 10)…

Sports section begins on page 16, and veteran pitcher Paul Derringer, now playing for the Chicago Cubs, has collected his 200th win. Here’s a look at his career numbers through the end of 1943:

On page 17, former St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Terry Moore is now an Army private, playing ball in the Caribbean. The former Redbird captain has already seen quite a bit of combat over the Southwest Pacific…
