The White House has announced that this year’s Army-Navy game will be held at West Point. Attendees will be limited to men from the service academies and locals from within a 10-mile area… Back in July we reported on an American paratrooper that endured brutal treatment by the Italians, only to be “executed” by their captain. Pfc. Michael A. Scambelluri of the 82nd Airborne Division’s 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment was captured by Italian soldiers on Sicily who thought the Italian-American was a spy. They shot Scambelluri multiple times in the chest and then tossed grenades at him, thinking they had surely done him in.

George Fielding Eliot column on page eight… Sports section begins on page 19, and former Texas A&M All-American back John Kimbrough has graduated Army twin-engine pilot training. He seems to be perpetually tied to fellow All-American back Tom Harmon of Michigan, who is also an Army Air Force pilot…

Page 20 discusses the Japanese-American unit that is happy to be fighting for the U.S. Army in Sicily. This is the 100th Infantry Battalion, which has been assigned to the 34th Infantry Division and received its baptism of fire this week… Apart from a white battalion commander and some of the company commanders, the entire outfit consists of Japanese American soldiers. These Nisei (Japanese for “second-generation”) fight so well that the Army will form a second all-Japanese outfit…

On page 27 we see that For Whom the Bell Tolls is in its third week at the Palace. Just so happens I watched this movie last night. It’s the film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel about an American demolition man who volunteered to fight for the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. Gary Cooper plays the protagonist and the gorgeous Ingrid Bergman is his love interest. I thought the characters and story were both great…
