Lt. Gen. Mark Clark’s Fifth Army is in for a tough fight; we learn from the front page that they face Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel. The Desert Fox now commands Army Group B, which was formed this summer… Page six details the how different the war in Europe looks today versus just a month ago…

Page three reports that three Marines were killed fighting a wildland fire 45 miles east of San Diego. The fire was likely started by a smoldering tracer round from machinegun range at Camp Lockett, where the Marine Corps operates schools for signals and motorized transportation students. When heavy smoke was spotted, the Marines were sent to assist the Forest Service, despite having no training in fire suppression. Several men are in critical condition, and seven more will ultimately perish from the Hauser Canyon fire…

Sports section begins on page 25, which tells how the Nationals turned a triple play on the Detroit yesterday… Page 26 shows that St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Murry Dickson, now a soldier serving at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., has been given a furlough so he can play in the World Series — one of two ballplayers granted that privilege during the entire war. Dickson will serve in the 35th Infantry Division and drives a jeep through Europe. One day he has to dive into a foxhole to avoid enemy fire, and Gen. George Patton dives in on top of him. Patton asks Dickson if he would be interested in becoming his driver, but Dickson declines.
